· Students will get their data folders and do their Self Selected Skills Centers (there are 125 activities all together and over 270 skill builders)…explanation of self selected skill centers/ data folders below:
Students were given a 3 day Language Arts and Reading Skills Assessment that thoroughly tested them in all areas of LA and Reading! The test is broken up into Skill sections (sounds &letters, word analysis, word meaning, synonyms, antonyms, context clues, main idea & details, evaluating information, constructing meaning, characters, plot, reading literature, parts of speech, sentences, combining sentences, writing paragraphs, spelling, languages of the world, punctuation, capitalization, research skills, reference sources, figurative language and maps, charts graphs!) For each skill I made an average of about 10 games and activities to go with each skill and an average of about 50 skill builders came from Sylvan Learning for each skill. The students have a list/check sheet with all of the activities and skills on them along with all of their assessments and scores in a data folder that they will carry on them at all times during language arts class. . The number in each skill section the students have to complete is based solely on their score in that skill on the assessment. The purpose of this is to have all students working at an independent level on skills activities and an instructional level in skill building! The self selected part is that each day they chose what skill and activities they would like to focus on. The activity locations are coded on the check sheet so that the activities/games, etc. are easy to find. After they have chosen their skill, they are responsible for doing the activity, working hard, checking themselves with rubrics and keys, having me check it and if they work hard and/or receive an 80% or above they will receive tokens. We have a token chart, with rewards they can purchase with tokens, as an incentive for students to work hard, be responsible and show growth by doing well! All students are on different levels with activities as well as skill building. The activities on the check sheet go from easiest to hardstand are listed under each skill heading in their folders. Level range from 1st-10th grade and activities cover all multi-intelligences, 21st century learning modules, learning styles and different cultures in an attempt to cover all levels of difficulty and all types of learners.
· Computers/ Social Studies (some Science, LA & Math)– Quest Atlantis a 3D virtual world in which our students make their own Avatar, interact with children all over the world and solve teacher made quest. Our class is currently working on an assigned quest in SS about US Historical documents and their significance; as well as an assigned Language Arts activity in Poetry.
· Social Studies – Students are doing group projects about World War I, New Industries, Acquiring new land...such as Hawaii and Alaska, The Great Depression and the Roaring 1920's. Projects will be presented on Tuesday April 6th for a grade. Students watched a real silent movie from 1927 and listened to jazz music from the 20's era in class.
